Brest (in France) has been chosen to host the first International Ocean Summit on 11 and 12 February 2022. The aim is to better protect marine biodiversity by completing international maritime law.
At the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) congress in Marseille (France) in early September, it was decided to launch the One Ocean Summit in Brest (France) in early 2022. The One Ocean summit, the “international summit dedicated to the preservation of the oceans”, will be organised in Brest and the event will be implemented by Olivier Poivre-d’Arvor, ambassador for the poles and maritime issues. At the September 2019 parliamentary G7 meeting on the exploitation and preservation of the oceans, the presidents of the parliaments were convinced that the oceans hold inestimable wealth and strong development potential, particularly in terms of “unsuspected resources”.
Breaking the legal limbo
The moratorium on ocean exploration by IUCN Congress members concluded that there is a clear need to improve our knowledge of the oceans to better understand their wealth, but also to better measure the impacts of any activities that may be carried out there. The oceans are rich and have great potential for development; they have unsuspected resources. But they are also areas that are in legal limbo. On the agenda of the international summit: ocean exploration and an investment plan with a budget of 2 billion euros over 5 years. Also, a better knowledge of this environment is favoured in order to measure the impacts of activities that can be carried out there.
