After 2 years of work, the Arab Emirates have completed the construction of the largest solar park in the world. Located in the middle of the desert, it should enable the country to accelerate its ecological transition.
Al Dhafra PV2 is the name of the project designed by French company EDF Renouvelables and Chinese company Jinko Power HK. It consists of 8 km² of solar panels, with a power of 2 GW, in the middle of the desert 35 km south of Abu Dhabi. The project took two years to complete, with 2,900 employees and 3.3 million solar panels installed at the same location. The plant will produce enough electricity to supply 160,000 homes.
The Emirates aim to reach 50% of renewable energy by 2050
The project avoids the release of 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 each year, which is equivalent to taking 200,000 cars off the road. Relying on year-round sunshine, the electricity will be sold at a very low rate. A robot is responsible for cleaning the panels with a dry roller. This project is a major step for the Emirates in the ecological transition, which aims to reach 50% of energy from renewable sources by 2050.
